One of the drivers jumped down to the ground and dove into a ditch. The rest of the drivers stayed in their cabs. Some tried to drive away but found there was no room to turn the big rigs. Others, when confronted by gun wielding VC, hesitated to hand over money. One of the truck drivers had his brains splattered all over the inside of the cab when he refused to cooperate.

“You take the one on the left and I’ll take the one on the right,” Clint said.

Within two seconds two VC lay on the dirt road bleeding to death. The two remaining tax collectors sprinted back to the relative safety of their comrades in the woods.

Most of the PF soldiers had jumped into the ditch on the right side of the road. The VC was hidden in the jungle on the other side of the road and about a hundred meters back. Clint and Chuong were stuck in the middle under the lead truck. Neither force could see where to shoot but that did not discourage them from shooting anyway.

Clint asked Chuong, “Would you rather be shot by the enemy or by friendly fire?”

Chuong stopped to think about it.

“Don’t stop firing. Think about it later.” Jesus Christ; no sense of humor, Clint mumbled to himself

The sporadic gun fight continued for a half hour. Soon most of the tires on the trucks were punctured. Clint and Chuong continued firing into the jungle.

A brave radio operator finally scrambled up to Chuong wearing his radio pack. Chuong got on the horn and asked for reinforcements. In half an hour seven PF platoons converged on the area. The VC, with two killed and an estimated four wounded, ran away to fight another day. They failed to collect any taxes. Bullet-riddled watermelons leaked from the trucks.
